Huon Channel Cricket Association Inc.

During 2003, the Channel Cricket Association (CCA) and the Huon Cricket Association (HCA) commenced meetings about a possible merger after an approach by representatives of the HCA to the CCA. This process commenced a long and thorough preparation for the merger to be able to successfully take place. Eventually, after agreement between clubs within each of these two separate associations, the inaugural meeting of the Huon Channel Cricket Association was held at the Longley Hotel on 6 September 2004. The meeting attracted 54 people.

Immediately following this meeting was the new association's inaugural Annual General Meeting to elect office bearers and committee members. At this stage, the Association was run by a committee consisting of an Executive Committee, general committee members performing various tasks and two delegates from each club represented in the Association.

The Executive Committee was comprised of Harvey Stevenson as the inaugural President, Michael Ludeke as the Vice President, Secretary and Public Officer, Tony Bowden as Treasurer and Brett Johnstone and Nathan Page were also elected as Vice Presidents. Other Committee members included Mark Drake as the Event's Manager, Bruce Jennings as the Website Officer, Perry Lovell as the Operation's Manager, Peter Pitt as the Media Officer and Mark Loveluck as the Umpire's Co-ordinator. It had also been agreed that all living Life Members from the former CCA and HCA would be inducted as the Association's Founding Life Members.

The Association decided that initially, a three-tiered competition would be monitored, these being A, B and C Grades. It was a Constitutional rule that a club must first field an A Grade team in the competition before any other teams, however clubs could obtain a special exemption to this rule under special circumstances to have a differing configuration of teams entered into the competition.

J.Boag & Son and Kookaburra Sports PTY LTD each agreed to a three-year major sponsorship deal which was comprised of cash and product components. Much of the product component of the J.Boag & Son deal would go directly to affiliated clubs to assist with fundraising. These deals saw the HCCA become the J.Boag & Son Huon Channel Cricket Association proudly supported by Kookaburra Sports PTY LTD.

On the field 14 clubs nominated with a total of 33 teams for the 2004/2005 season. These clubs and their grade teams were: Blackmans Bay District Cricket (A, B and C), Bruny Island Cricket Club (C), Glen Huon Cricket Club (A and B), Huonville Cricket Club (A and B), Judbury Cricket Club (B), Kettering Cricket Club (A, B and C), Kingston Crows Cricket Club (A, B, C1 and C Youth side), Longley Cricket Club (B, C and C1 – C1 later withdrawn), Margate Cricket Club (A, B, C), Ranelagh-Grove Cricket Club (A and B), Slab Road Cricket Club (A, B and C), Snug Cricket Club (A and B), Southern Tigers Cricket Club (A and B), and Woodbridge Cricket Club (B and C).

The Kingston Crows Cricket Club along with Slab Road Cricket Club, Huonville Cricket Club, Glen Huon Cricket Club and Margate Cricket Club were the outstanding A Grade clubs who battled for the top four ladder positions for much of the season. In B Grade, Kingston, Margate and Slab Road were the dominant teams, Slab Road having the final say and winning the premiership. The C Grade competition saw Slab Road, Kingston, Bruny Island and Margate dominate much of the season, the Kingston Crows again too strong overpowering The Roadies for their second of three premierships on offer. The scores in the three grand finals for the inaugural season were:

A GRADE:

Kingston Crows 4-146 (Brett Stevenson 45, Garry Smith 36no, Andrew Henley 22no. Michael Parbs 2-26, Patrick Kelly 2-42) def Glen Huon 144 (Joshua Woolley 43. Lyndon Stevenson 3-36, Jason Jones 2-15, Nick Townsend 2-26, Jarrod Collis 2-27)

These were three names that could always be guaranteed a place in the history of the HCCA. For the full season's awards please go to 2004/2005 HCCA Season  Awards Results under the 2004/2005 tab.

2005/2006

At the August 2005 AGM to commence the HCCA’s second season, a motion was passed that the Association would be re-structured to have its affairs managed by a Board of Management, thus eliminating the need for meetings consisting of up to 40 people. There would, now, be a Board of Management comprised of seven people who would report to member clubs with feedback at President's meetings.

Voted as the HCCA inaugural Board of management were Harvey Stevenson as Chairperson, Nathan Page as Vice Chairperson, Michael Ludeke as Secretary and Public Officer, Tony Bowden as Treasurer and Garry O'Brien, Brett Johnstone and Michael Oakford as Board Members.  Other nominated positions not on the Board of Management were Erin Page as Operations Manager, Shane Gates as Umpire's Co-ordinator, Michael Ludeke and Garry O'Brien shared the Event's Manager role, Bruce Jennings as Website Officer, Daniel Smee as Publicity Officer and in two new roles to assist the Operations Manager complete the enormous task of data entry for statistics, Perry Lovell was the A and B Grade Statistician while Nathan Page was the C Grade Statistician.

On the field there was an additional club with the reformation of the Esperance Cricket Club. Clubs and teams represented in the Association for the 2005/2006 season were otherwise the same, with the competition grades being made up as follows:

A Grade with 10 teams (four team final series), B Grade 14 teams (with an eight team final structure) and C Grade with 12 teams (with a five team final series) for a total of 36 teams in the association (one club and three teams more than in the inaugural season). These teams, as submitted by the respective clubs were:

Blackmans Bay District Cricket (A, B and C), Bruny Island Cricket Club (C), Esperance Cricket Club (B and C), Glen Huon Cricket Club (A and B), Huonville Cricket Club (A and B), Kettering Cricket Club (A, B and C), Judbury Cricket Club (B), Kingston Crows Cricket Club (A, B, C1 and C2), Longley Cricket Club (B and C), Margate Cricket Club (A, B, C and C2), Ranelagh-Grove Cricket Club (A, B and C), Slab Road Cricket Club (A, B and C), Snug Cricket Club (A and B), Southern Tigers Cricket Club (A and B), and Woodbridge Cricket Club (B and C).

The year saw the Blackmans Bay District Cricket Club dominate the first half of the season and by the Christmas break, the reigning A Grade premiers, the Kingston Crows, looked in doubt of claiming a finals birth. There was significant jockeying for a finals position between Glen Huon Cricket Club, Margate Cricket Club, Ranelagh-Grove Cricket Club and the eventual fourth placed Kettering Cricket Club. Slab Road dominated the second half of the season before being bundled out of the finals race in straight sets by a pumped up Blackmans Bay. In B Grade, Esperance and the Kingston Crows dominated the season, although Esperance had been the most consistence team in the competition over the season only to finish second for the minor premiership to the Kingston Crows who eventually won the flag. Bruny Island and Kingston dominated the C Grade roster, however the quiet-achieving Margate made a big dent knocking the Penguins out to play off in the Grand Final. Kingston Crows C1 was too strong and made it a hat trick for the year claiming the A, B and C Grade premierships. The Kingston Crows Cricket Club had now won five of the first six premierships on offer in the first two years of the Association. The grand final scores were:

A Grade:

Kingston Crows 166 (Robert Chapman 39, Andrew Henley 27, Brett Stevenson 26, Luke Barlow 4-16, Josh Swindells 2-34, Gordon Kerr 2-37) def Blackmans Bay 132 (Steven O’Brien 20, Andrew Henley 4-32, Scott Sward 2-16, Lyndon Stevenson 2-32).

B Grade:

Kingston Crows 8-212 (Jason Williams 41, James Murray 33, Malcolm Godfrey 30, Marcus Newman 29, Jason Jones 25, Andrew Denton 20no, Anthony Baker 3-40, Clinton Seabourne 2-32, Aaron Bumford 2-53) def Esperance 7-209 (Shane Norris 49no, Mark Bradley 37no, David Reynolds 28, Clinton Seabourne 23, Nathan Batchelor 21, Jonathon Cashion 3-24, Andrew Denton 2-42).

C Grade:

Kingston Crows C1 0-126 (Richard McInnes 68no, Gareth Percey 41no) def Margate C1 121 (Jody Russell 32, Michael Blake 24, Ben Sward 22, Paul Gibson 3-8, Nolan McGuire 3-27).

With the demise of the long-standing Country Week competition, a new innovation was developed between the Association and the Southern Cricket Association. Each year, the two Associations would play off for the Stevenson-Howard Cup in a representative match. On the cup, the Stevenson was in honour of Harvey Stevenson the first ever President/Chairman of the J.Boag & Son Huon Channel Cricket Association. Howard was in reference to two of the Southern Cricket Association's finest servants. The match was played at the Margate Cricket Club on 20 February 2006 and saw a close battle between the two associations, the HCCA winning in a close match. When the HCCA was bundled out for a meagre 167 and the SCA were making strides towards reaching the total, a succession of quick wickets by the HCCA won the match for them. The results were:

Huon Channel Cricket Association 167 (Lyndon Stevenson 43, Aron Cherry 35, Ben Swards 30, Michael Assman 2-17, Glendon Bentley 2-25, Rodney Callinan 2-26) def Southern Cricket Association 128 (Glendon Bentley 64, James Wolfe 23, Aron Cherry 4-59, Gordon Kerr 3-37, Dale Punshon 2-21).

The following season would see the match be played at the Cambridge Cricket Club. For more information about this match please see Stevenson-Howard Cup under the 2005/2006 tab.

For the year's awards, The A Grade Huon Valley news Player of the Year Award, Aron Cherry from the Margate Cricket Club won the award for the second successive year, however he did not have it all to himself tying on 21 votes with Michael Parbs from the Glen Huon Cricket Club. Newcomers, the Esperance Cricket Club, snared its first major award with Anthony Baker winning the B Grade Best and Fairest award while in C Grade Andrew Wilcox of Woodbridge was the season’s best and fairest. The best and fairest award count for the three grades was held in conjunction with the annual dinner and trophy presentation at the Margate Tavern.

This season saw the first Life Member inductee - Ian Townsend who had contributed tirelessly for well in excess of 30 years in both the former HCA and then CCA and was now the President of the Kingston Crows Cricket Club. Also in its second season the Association finally was given some identity with a logo in its designated colours of maroon and gold. The maroon had been lifted from the former CCA while the gold was from the HCA. The logo was designed by competition entries, of which Association Secretary Michael Ludeke contributed the winning design.

2006/2007

The elected Board for the third season of the J.Boag & Son HCCA was Harvey Stevenson (Chairman), Brett Johnstone (Vice Chairman), Paul Santalucia (and later Shane Gates) as Secretary and Public Officer, Tony Bowden (Treasurer), and Michael Oakford, Greg Beechey and Lyndon Stevenson as the three Board Members. Shane Gates (and later Brett Johnstone) was elected as Operations Manager and Brett Johnstone as the Statistician, Nathan Page as Events Manager, Bob Smith (and later Shane Gates) as Umpires' Co-ordinator, Daniel Smee as Media Officer and Marcus Raine as the Website Officer.

15 Clubs with 36 teams registered for the 2006/2007 season. In what was a major structural change, the competition would be structured with four divisions to attempt to even out the competition within the grades. The competition would contain A, B1, B2 and C Grades for the 2006-2007 season. The 15 clubs and their teams for 2006-2007 were:

Blackmans Bay District Cricket Club (A, B1, C), Bruny Island Cricket Club (B2), Glen Huon Cricket Club (A and B2), Esperance Cricket Club (B1 and C), Huonville Cricket Club (A and B2), Judbury Cricket Club (B1), Kettering Cricket Club (A, B1 and C), Kingston Crows Cricket Club (A, B1, B2, C), Longley Cricket Club (B2 and C), Margate Cricket Club (A, B1, two C Grade teams), Ranelagh-Grove Cricket Club (A, B2 and C), Slab Road Cricket Club (A, B1, C), Snug Cricket Club (A and B2), Southern Tigers Cricket Club (A and B2) and Woodbridge Cricket Club (B1 and C).

Slab Road, Blackmans Bay, Kingston Crows and Snug were the four strongest A Grade teams, finishing in this order for the finals and only just keeping out another couple of teams. In the first HCCA A Grade grand final without the Kingston Crows Cricket Club, Blackmans Bay were too strong for Slab Road winning their first J.Boag & Son A Grade premiership. Final scores were:

A Grade:

Blackmans Bay 9/219 (Gordon Kerr 87, David Hulton 37, Martin Elliott 27*, Nathan Clark 4/53, Brad Thomas 2/29) d Slab Road 215 (Damien Coad 58*, Brad Thomas 56, Stuart Clark 31, Nathan Clark 26, Tim Polmear 3/52, Gordon Kerr 2/39)

In B1 Grade Kingston Crows, Esperance, Blackmans Bay and Slab Road dominated with Esperance and the Kingston Crows again playing off in a grand final against one-another. This time, Esperance were too strong and in only their second year in the J.Boag & Son HCCA snared a premiership. Final scores were:

 B1 Grade:

Esperance 5/221 (Paul Jager 121*, Michael Pearce 36*, Nathan Batchelor 21, David Reynolds 20, Jonathon Cashion 2/43, Tim Smith 2/47) d Kingston Crows 9/220 (David Bain 66, Marc Owen 47, Marcus Newman 22, Michael Pearce 2/27, Wes Burgess 2/36, Mark Bradley 2/48, Aaron Bumford 2/59)

In B2 Grade, Longley dominated comfortably from Snug, Glen Huon and Kingston, the top four having a sizeable break from the remaining teams. Longley, playing in their first grand final in any grade in a number of years, played off against Glen Huon who was playing in their first J.Boag & Son HCCA grand final. Longley were too strong and captured a valuable premiership.

 B2 Grade:

Longley 5-117 (Luke Ford 62, Dean Chatwin 21, Troy Geeves 2-11) d Glen Huon 116 (Malcolm Duggan 39, Paul Harriss 20, Ryan Fielding 4-21, Dean Chatwin 3-12, Christo LeGrange 2-18)

In C Grade Margate C1, Ranelagh-Grove, Woodbridge, and Slab Road dominated in the roster season. Margate and Slab Road were the two who made it through to the C Grade grand final, and Margate easily defeated for the Roadies.

 C Grade:

Margate 9/227 (Shannon Lawless 53*, Andrew Fenton 41, Michael Blake 23, Brett Johnstone 21, Joe Hindle 4/36, David Griffiths 2/59) d Slab Road 91 (Rhys Jennings 22, Graeme Young 3/34, Andrew Fenton 3/3, Brad Coad 2/50)

          In the underage competition Glen Huon won the Under 15 competition, the grand final scores being: Glen Huon 4/176 (Jordan Lovell 41 retired, Michael Paul 40 retired, James Woolley 30, John Page 18, Adam Crowe 1/14, Josh Stevenson 1/15) defeated Ranelagh-Grove 10/166 (Shane Fletcher 61, Ben Askey 28, Josh Bester 22, Sam Yaxley 21, Alex Crouch 4/26, Zac Watson 2/32, Brad Conlan 1/10). Ranelagh-Grove won the Under 13 competition. The scores being: Ranelagh-Grove 8/109 (O.Cordwell 16, B.Bester 15, J.Dean 3/8, G.Warren 2/14) defeated Slab Road 10/62 (R.Nichols 21, B.Smith 7, S.Buxton 3/9, J.Stanway 2/11, E.Ragus 2/4).

Of the three years of the J.Boag & Son HCCA, it was the first time the Kingston Crows Cricket Club had not dominated grand final day, only appearing in one grand final. Of the four premierships, four clubs tasted their first J.Boag & Son HCCA premiership success.

The Southern Cricket Association won the second annual Stevenson-Howard Cup on Sunday 26 February 2007. The match, played at Cambridge, saw the SCA bat first and make 9/381. Steve Fiddler took 4-74 for the HCCA, Gordon Kerr 2-63 and Dale Punshon, Phil Bell and Steve Howard one wicket each. The HCCA was bowled out for 297 in the 45th over. Chris Hevey (102), Nathan Webb (75), Paul Johnstone (28), Dale Punshon (22), Steve Fiddler and Gordon Kerr (20) all contributed with the bat.

In the major awards for the season, Michael Parbs (Glen Huon) won the Huon Valley News Player of the Year Award in A Grade. David Reynolds (Esperance Cricket Club) won the B1 best and fairest award, Brett Hickey (Southern Tigers Cricket Club) the B2 best and fairest and David Griffiths (Slab Road Cricket Club) the C Grade best and fairest award.

The season saw the second and third life members inducted into to the association. Tony Bowden had previously been a player and committee member of the Ranelagh-Grove Cricket Club, player, President and long-time Treasurer of the Kingston Crows Cricket Club, Treasurer of the Channel Cricket Association for five years until its amalgamation and the inaugural Treasurer of the J.Boag & Son HCCA. Tony’s commitment to the amalgamation of the former CCA and HCA was second to none. Paul Harriss had been a Glen Huon and Huon Cricket Association stalwart for many years, representing the Glen Huon Cricket Club as a delegate in the HCA for about 20 years, a HCA Secretary for about three years, Secretary and Treasurer of the Glen Huon Cricket Club for approximately 15 years, a member of the steering committee overseeing the amalgamation of the CCA and HCA, a Country Week umpire and had won numerous awards for the Glen Huon Cricket Club.
