Kingston Crows are HCCA 2011-12 A Grade Premiers

Kingston Crows Captain and Man of the Match Daniel Elliott led his flock of team mates to a nerve racking Grand Final victory over the Slab Road Roadies last Saturday afternoon in front of a huge crowd at what will be their last official HCCA game at Lightwood Park before moving to their new home at Kingston Beach Oval.

Electing to bat first in superb conditions the Crows steadily accumulated crucial foundation runs and were soon in the box seat via a 117 opening stand between Elliott (88) and Trent Rollins (60) before the latter was run out in the 28th over the first of two telling direct hits from Luke Swards. Roadies skipper Damien Clark (3-48) and veteran tweaker Jason Clark (2-37) then systematically dissected the home side’s defense however a very valuable contribution from number 6 Jarrod Collis (30) ensured the Crows would at least post a respectable tally. In the quest for quick late innings runs the home side stumbled in losing Elliott and 2 more wickets at 235 leaving Jamie Knott (13 not out) the task of seeing them through to 8/249 from the allotted 50 overs. In pursuit the highly anticipated onslaught from the Roadies opening combo of Daniel Watson (37) and Bradley Clark (33) came to fruition blasting 60 from the first 6 overs before Watson fell, immediately followed by Damien Coad (0), both victims of seamer Shannon Woolley (2-33). Clark and Luke Sward (43) added 30 for the 3rd to be well placed at 2-96 before inspiring 10 over spells from Elliott (2-34) and Andrew Henley (1-13) swung the pendulum back to the Crows with the Roadies 5-137 and the run rate required escalating. Dale Punshon then dismissed Jason Clark (20) to end a 31 run partnership with Aron Cherry. David Bone (13) joined Cherry for a 41 run stand as Cherry kept the Crows and the crowd on their collective toes in blasting four 4’s and six 6’s. Ash Woodhead (1-29) then rattled Cherry’s stumps at 7-209 giving rise to the return of new ballers Dale Punshon (3-54) & Jamie Knott (1-35) to clean up the tail and secure victory for the Kingston Crows in the 48th over with 22 runs in reserve.

Kingston Crows 8-249 (50) (D Elliott 88, T Rollins 60, J Collis 30, D Clark 3-48, J Clark 2-37) def Slab Road Roadies 10-228 (47.3) (A Cherry 44, L Swards 43, D  Watson 37, B Clark 33, J Clark 20, D Punshon 3-54, D Elliott 2-34, S Woolley 2-33)

B Grade Grand Final Scores

Slab Road Roadies are HCCA 2011-12 B Grade Premiers

The Slab Road Roadies Cricket Club triumphantly secured its 3rd Flag for the 2011-12 Season by taking out the B Grade Premiership at Sherburd Park against the Blackmans Bay Sharks following on from the Roadies C1 Grade Premiership the previous weekend and the Division 1 T20 Premiership earlier in the season.

The Sharks elected to bat first and would have been reasonably satisfied with the decision when reaching 1-46 via Andrew Barron (35) and Cam Pereira (21) then 2-87, Phil Drake (19), before Barron was back in the sheds at 3-103. Captain David Hulton (33) took up the challenge and led by example to pile on a further 78 with Daniel Brokate (54) before both fell with the home side 5-185. Slab’s bowlers hunted in relentless packs with all 6 used taking at least one wicket with Justin Direen (2-24) particularly tidy and making life tuff for the Sharks tail to restrict the final tally to 8-213 from the maximum 50 overs. Paul Cowen (24) and Brendan Dare (32) announced the visitor’s intentions with 53 for the opening stand however the unscheduled loss of David Griffiths (14) and Adam Coad (8), both falling to Nick Hansson (2-46), followed by Cowen at 4-95 gave the Sharks reason to renew high hopes. Enter the in form Bradley Watson who then proceeded to dominate a 63 run 5th wicket partnership with his patient skipper Steve Direen (19). Watson (81 not out) then added a further punishing and undefeated 57 runs with Justin Direen (13 not out) to carry his bat and Man of the Match performance across the line for the Roadies in the 37th over.

Slab Road Roadies 5-215 (36.5) (B Watson 81*, B Dare 32, P Cowen 24, N Hansson 2-46)

def Blackmans Bay Sharks 8-213 (50) (D Brokate 54, A Barron 35, D Hulton 33, C Pereira 21, Justin Direen 2-24, N Clark 2-51)

C1 Grand Final Scores

SLAB ROAD ROADIES 2011-12 C1 PREMIERS

Slab Road Cricket Club clinched what they hope will be the first of three 2011-12 Grand Final Flags when they eventually overcame a gritty Kettering Crickets outfit at Cygnet Oval to take out the 2011-12 C1 Premiership. Despite being undefeated throughout 2011-12 the Roadies batsmen struggled against a plucky Crickets bowling attack lead by Cameron Dick (3-22), Ben Cameron (3-52) and Jason Clark (2-49) with only Joel Summers (27), Justin Jarrett (20), Rod Dance (17) and Ben Smith (16) reaching double figures along with the assistance of 20 telling extras before the home side eventually succumbed to be all out for 127 with 14 overs unused. Kettering produced copious glimpses of snatching a well deserved upset however the fine tuned four pronged assault of Brad Cordwell (4-25), Daniel Walter (3-29), Pat Coulson (2-31) and Corey Polley (1-27) regularly broke through at vital times to keep the visitors in check. Daniel Twigg (32) searched high & low for a match winning partnership and skipper Cameron Dick (29) earned Man of the Match by almost getting his charges across the line before being the 4th wicket trapped LBW in the innings, and last man out with only a tantalizing 8 runs required for victory.

Slab Road Roadies 10-127 (25.5) (J Summers 27, J Jarrett 20, C Dick 3-22, B Cameron 3-52, J Clark 2-49)

def Kettering Crickets 10-121 (35.3) (D Twigg 32, C Dick 29, B Cordwell 4-25, D Walter 3-29, P Coulson 2-31)

C2 Grand Final Scores

NORTH HUON WARRIORS 2011-12 C2 PREMIERS

The old firm of Joe Roberts (43) and Geoff Buxton (41) produced a matching winning 4th wicket partnership of 68 to secure victory for the North Huon Warriors over the Bruny Island Penguins and take out the C2 Premiership at Huonville Oval. Batting first on the sluggish surrounds a relatively cautious Bruny line up never quite came to grips with the Warriors attack with exception of opener, and Man of the Match, Andrew Plunkett (56) and number 6 Jonathon Hawkins (23). The only other double figures tallies being produced by James Marthick (10) and extras (17). Veteran Scott Coad stood tall in scalping 3-17 and was ably supported by Riley Anning (2-21), Bevan Roberts (1-7), Phil Midgley (1-31) and Alexanders Price (1-37) along with two crushing run outs as the Penguins were dismissed in the 39th for 142. In defense most Bruny bowlers showed promise headed by Craig Pursell (2-17) however the foundation for the Roberts/Buxton combination was staunchly laid earlier by opener Matt Sawdy (28) and later capitalized on by youngster Braedon Page (15 not out) as the Warriors eased passed the target with 5 wickets and three and half overs in reserve.

North Huon Warriors 5-143 (36.3) (J Roberts 43, G Buxton 41, M Sawdy 28, C Pursell 2-17)

def Bruny Island Penguins 10-142 (39) (A Plunkett 56, J Hawkins 23, S Coad 3-17, R Anning 2-21)

Roadies drive home with the HCCA 2011-12 Twenty20 Premiership Shield

Slab Road Roadies skipper Damien Clark lead his well drilled charges from the front in a dominant display to clinch the 2011-12 HCCA Twenty20 Division 1 Premiership title last Sunday evening with a resounding victory over the Kingston Crows in front of a huge crowd at Lightwood Park Kingston to go Back to Back with last seasons T20 Premiership title.

Batting first the Kingston Crows started confidently and looked set to reach Grand Final lead up predictions as openers Dan Elliott (17) and Trent Rollins (12) raced to 36 without loss until in the blink of an eye being rapidly reduced to 4-40 due mainly to inspired spells from the visitors Paul Lipscombe (3-27) and Nathan Rollins (2-28). Jarrod Collis (25) and Jamie Knott (25) then provided rising hope from the middle order to competitively boost the tally however the return of Damien Clark (3-24) destroyed the home side’s resurrection as the Crows unceremoniously capitulated in the 19th to be all out for a despondent 126 with 11 deliveries unused. The Crows desperately needed a white night to gain the upper hand in defending the mediocre target and Jamie Knott (2-13) stepped up to the challenge however a brisk 2nd wicket partnership of 33 from opener Brad Clark (17) and Damien Coad (29) set the foundations for the Roadies to remain relatively calm and dictate terms despite two untimely run outs. Captain Damien Clark (36), batting at 5, then combined with number 7 David Bone (17*) to safely guide the Roadies across the finishing line for a deserved victory with 4 wickets and 10 balls in hand. The Roadies Back to Back Premierships continues the domination of the HCCA’s Twenty20 format from this season’s combatants with the Kingston Crows previously winning the first three HCCA T20 Premierships. Slab Road will now represent the HCCA and take on the Tasman Cricket Association in Round 1 of the Statewide Twenty20 Carnival scheduled for Sunday January 15 2012.

Slab Road Roadies 6-127 (18.2) D Clark 36, D Coad 29, J Knott 2-13) def Kingston Crows 10-126 (18.1) (J Collis 25, J Knott 25, D Clark 3-24, P Lipscombe 3-27, N Rollins 2-28)

SHARKS SHINE IN T20 DIV 2 GRAND FINAL

New baller Nathan Walton and opening batsman Andrew Barron provided the victorious Blackmans Bay Sharks with match winning performances in the HCCA Division 2 Twenty20 Grand Final clash with the Southern Tigers at Franklin last Tuesday evening. Being invited to bat first the Tigers struggled against the tight lines of Walton (4-24) and new ball partner Andrew Williams (2-17) and despite good starts from Collin Bennett (23), Ashby Hickey (24) and Jeremy Hickey (16) the home side was precariously placed at 5-68 at the half way mark. Number 5 Jake Barry (30) then cautiously controlled proceedings for the home side before being last out with the compulsory 20 over closure at 8-120. In pursuit Andrew Barron (50*) plundered anything loose in setting the early pace for the visitors and then combined with an equally punishing David Hulton (48) for a resolute second wicket partnership of 62 before the Sharks coolly cantered to the HCCA’s 2011-12 Division 2 T20 Premiership title with 8 wickets in reserve and 16 balls to spare.

Blackmans Bay Sharks 2-122 (17.2) (A Barron 50*, D Hulton 48, J Barry 2-35) def Southern Tigers 8-120 (20) (J Barry 30, A Hickey 24, C Bennett 23, N Walton 4-24, A Williams 2-17)

HCCA verses SCA - Representative Game Report

Saturday 5 February 2011 - Geilston Bay Oval

The Southern Cricket Association retained the Howard/Stevenson Cup, defeating the Huon Channel Cricket Association by five wickets at the Geilston Bay Oval.  HCCA skipper Daniel Elliott won the toss and with a pleasing crowd of supporters in attendance, elected to bat.  After the early loss of Vice captain Chris Hevey for 5, Elliott (19) and Hamish Jamieson (29) raced to 54 in the 10th over before the latter fell to a classic catch.  When Brad Lovell (2) and Josh Woolley (3) followed soon after, the HCCA was in trouble.  This was compounded when Elliott also fell to a superb catch and it was left to Kristian Nikolai to add some respectability to the total before he departed for 26 in the 23rd over with the score on 92.  A minor rearguard action eventually succumbed to the relentless pressure from Nathan Mallinson (4-33) and John Pregnell (2-18), after the early damage from Man of the Match Tom Robinson (4-44).

Brad Lovell gave the HCCA some hope with the new ball, dismissing the dangerous Mallinson (15) and Glendon Bentley (10) inside the first five overs.  However, Trent Graham picked up from where he left off in the past two encounters, slamming 44 in rapid time before he was dismissed by Steve O’Brien.  Pip Cockshutt bludgeoned a quick fire 33 before two wickets to Nikolai slowed the SCA’s charge to victory.  However, with five wickets and 29 overs in hand, SCA Captain James Wolfe (11*) guided his team to their third win in a row over the HCCA.   Despite the loss, the HCCA players and management team can walk away from the game with their heads held high after displaying an exemplary approach to the game and proudly executing their responsibilities as ambassadors for the association.

SCA 5-132 (T Graham 44, P Cockshutt 33; K Nikolai 2-7, B Lovell 2-43) defeated

HCCA 10-131 (H Jamieson 29, K Nikolai 26; N Mallinson 4-33, T Robinson 4-44, J Pregnell 2-18)

Roadies T20 Champions

Slab Road will represent the HCCA in the Cricket Tasmania T20 Championship after defeating North Huon in the Division One Grand Final at the inaugural HCCA Triple Header Grand Final Gala Day held at the Huonville Oval on Sunday November 14, 2010.

Overnight rain that persisted into the morning threatened to postpone the triple-header Gala Day but conditions improved enough to allow the U/17’s Colts match to get underway on schedule. The match between representative sides from the Huon and Channel saw the Huon side take to the field first under the captaincy of Brad Bell.  Channel, skippered by Trent Rollins, was able to post a formidable score of 7-143 in the wet conditions due mainly to 55 from opener Jordan Willoughby and 28 to Brodie Hendricks.  The total eventually proved too much for a valiant Huon side falling short of the target by 18 runs despite a splendid 44 from local all-rounder Jacob Stanway.

The Division Two match between Margate and the Kingston Crows saw a comfortable win to the Crows.  Batting first, Margate struggled in the damp conditions, tight Crows’ bowling lead by Chris Tomlin (3/17) and exceptional fielding, reaching a total of 113 before being all out after 18.2 overs with Captain Chris Golding (38) and Chris Bailey (24) the main contributors.  Despite the loss of an early wicket, the Crows’ maintained momentum to be 1/81 in the 12th before Marc Owen (58) become the first of a quick succession of wickets taken by Ben Swards (4/20) including one with the assistance of an absolute classic catch by the Mecca’s Andrew Denton.  The Crows’ batsmen continued to gain the ascendancy of the challenge and reached the victory target 5 down with 6 balls to spare.

Weather conditions had improved considerably by mid afternoon for the start of the Division One clash between Slab Road and North Huon.  The Roadies won the toss and elected to bat first and after being 4/28 in the 7th a series of small but consistent partnerships saw them reach of total of 9-126 from their 20 overs. Jason Clark top scored with 24, with Marcus Raine (3-21) and Adam Crowe (2-26) the best of the Warriors’ bowlers.  In reply, North Huon struggled to keep up with the required run rate and regularly lost wickets in pursuit of the tight bowling, with Julian Direen claiming the day’s best figures of 5-22.  Shane Fletcher, batting at number 8, played a lone hand for the Warriors, scoring an unbeaten 42 as his side pulled up short by 25 runs to finish on 9-101.
